MEET THE MENTORS

ALAN RICHARDSON
DIRECTOR OF SURGE 

Alan has been working in outdoor arts and indoor theatre for 25 years as a producer, director, teacher, performer, musician and musical director. He has been responsible for the development of teaching practice in outdoor arts in Porto (European Capital of Culture 2001) and Liverpool (through Hope Street LTD). He has designed and programmed street theatre festivals in Porto, Liverpool and Glasgow. He is also a director of indoor and outdoor physical theatre, and has devised directed multiple performances that have enjoyed international touring success.

Alan is currently Director of Surge, an organisation dedicated to the promotion and development of outdoor arts, physical theatre and circus in Scotland. In this role, along with the rest of the Surge staff, he is responsible for developing and delivering professional development, masterclasses, residency and education and outreach programmes across Scotland. Surge also programmes and delivers Surge Festival, Scotland’s only physical performance festival that takes place each July in Glasgow.

BEVIS EVANS-TEUSCH 
FILMMAKER


Bevis is a BAFTA Scotland nominated filmmaker.  Large scale video projections include a tryptic filmed on location in Auschwitz for the UK’s first national holocaust memorial ceremony.  Visuals for live orchestral performance of Holst’s Planet Suite, BBC TWO/BBC SSO. Commonwealth Cultural Programme - Building size visuals with live performance inserts from Brazil.

ELISE DAVISON
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF TAKING FLIGHT

Elise is the co – founder, Artistic Director and Joint CEO of Taking Flight Theatre, a producing theatre company, making work with integrated casts of professional disabled, D/deaf / HOH and nondisabled actors which considers access as central to the creative vision. Elise also works as a Creative Access Adviser: working with D/deaf and disabled consultants to advise companies on ways which they can creatively integrate access into their work and make it accessible to as many people as possible.

EVAN RASKOB
LECTURER IN CREATIVE & PHYSICAL COMPUTING


Evan Raskob is an artist, livecoding performer and events organiser. Recently Evan's practice of livecoding 3D printers to make music was featured in the New York Times. An experienced interactive artist, interaction designer, consultant, and educator, he has over 14 years of teaching and course development and has been on staff at the RCA and now at Goldsmiths.

DR JESSICA SYMONS
DIRECTOR OF VISIONING LAB LTD

Dr Jessica Symons is an anthropologist, producer and digital entrepreneur. She likes working in collaboration with people weaving together ideas, opportunities and aspirations. Most recently she produced Groups of People, an augmented reality app and artwork for the Lightwaves Art Festival in Salford Quays, working with The Lowry, Quays Culture and visitors to the Immersive Lab at The Landing. She is also Honorary Research Fellow at Uni of Manchester and Finalist for the Inspiring Women 2020 Innovation Award.

NEILL RITCHIE
DEVELOPER / DIRECTOR OF AERIAL DIGITAL LTD

Aerial Digital is an app development business based in Glasgow. Our apps include Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality content, heritage trails and city tours, plus business and utilities apps which integrate with online services.

Developer Neill Ritchie has 20 years experience creating a range of digital content, coding languages mainly include PHP, MySQL, HTML / Javascript, ObjC, Java, and cross platform app development.

PAUL LONG
CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF MBD 

Paul is a founder member and Creative Director of MBD and has led the company for 23 years. Paul has extensive experience of creating powerful artistic concepts using new technologies. He leads the MBD team in creating a wide range of dynamic arts experiences from large scale projection spectacles, to intimate, emotive VR experiences.
Last year MBD was recognised by Digital Catapult as one of the 25 most innovative companies in the UK. Despite over 2 decades in the creative sector, MBD continues to lead the way with technological innovation in the arts.

Ryan Scott is a Glasgow based sound designer and creative coder originally from the United States, that specialises in bespoke interactive audio experiences as well as traditional sound design for video games, Zlm, and theatre.

STEPHANIE BACK
TAKING FLIGHT

Stephanie Back is a profoundly Deaf actress, theatre maker and workshop leader; her first language is British Sign Language. She is the lead facilitator in Wales’s only youth theatre for D/deaf/hoh young people and runs Deaf Awareness training sector wide. Since graduating from the University of Reading in 2016 with a first class degree in Theatre Arts, Education and Deaf Studies, Stephanie has performed for many theatre companies including: Taking Flight Theatre Company, Handprint Theatre, Mousetrap Theatre, National Theatre Wales, Illumine Theatre, Screenology and PAD productions.

Stephanie has also been working on her show "I Said I Love You" alongside Elise Davison and Alun Saunders since 2017.

JUSTIN BERRY
YALE UNIVERSITY

Justin Berry is an artist whose work explores the boundaries between the virtual and the real. He is A recipient of the 2014 NYFA artist's fellowship. He has a full-time appointment at the Yale School of Art as a Critic and as Core Faculty at the new Center for Collaborative Arts and Media. His work has been exhibited internationally in various venues, with work recently on view at the B3 Bienalle in Frankfurt GE, Noorderlicht in Gronigen NL, the Altonale in Hamburg DE, Wave Hill and Essex Flowers in New York, Artspace in New Haven, CAVE in Detroit, CUAC in Salt Lake City, and the University of Richmond Art Museum. Issues of Artforum, Art Review, Frieze, Pin-up magazine, Media-N, and others have included features on his work and Bomb Magazine commissioned the piece i-would.com from him as part of their portfolio series in 2013. From 2007 to 2008 he was co-director of the artist run curatorial space Alogon, in Chicago, IL and a member of the New York based collective Essex Flowers from 2014-2018. He holds an MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago.

ROSS GERRY
AV EXPERT

Ross has been working in the fields of music, theatre and performance for over 30 years. From lighting through to video and their crossover points.

Notable companies worked with include NVA, Raindog, the arches, TV program-Bits, 24 editions of Celtic Connections and 20 editions of the slam tent at T in the park. Some of last year's Clients include: Singer songwriter-Lewis Capaldi,DJ-Denis Sulta, Rock Band-Bring Me The Horizon
and Boomtown festivals-Lions Den stage. Creating content as well as live vision mixes of events

Specialising in large scale projection, LED screens and live presentations with cameras. He is currently exploring ways to move live entertainment forward in the current situation.
